Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
Are there many of us out here? These seem to be the least desireable of all 90% coins with lowest preference to dimes generally and Roosevelt less so than Mercs. I like them because they have less wear than Mercs and I don't think that they'll be much problem identifying them if the SHTF as some people have stated. They are clearly silver when compared to the clad ones. I'd like to have an garage full of these little babies... or at least a bathtub full so I could pull a little Scrooge McDuck action if I wanted to.

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
It's my favorite form of silver. I like Mercs, but they are not as rare as people think -- I once received an entire bag of them --and they seem more worn than the Roosevelts. Also, the quarters seem more worn, but I have my doubts that they're really more worn in terms of metal remaining, because surface area varies with the square of the radius, while volume varies with the cube of the radius, meaning that larger coins have a lower ratio of surface area to volume and will wear away a smaller proportion of metal than small coins.
I like quarters and halves, but as I build my stash I'll stick with 100-ounce ingots and Roosevelt dimes, both of which are underrated forms of silver. If I had entirely Roosevelt dimes, I wouldn't cry for one moment. One word of advice: don't count your way through a full bag. Find an honest dealer, open one half-bag and scan it for clads just to keep him honest, and then never open another bag -- that way lies madness. |

Good question CB. I like the Roos dimes, because you can still find them in change. Few notice the difference. Also, I can pick them up for less the Liberty dimes.
I am hopefull the US mint will change the design thus increasing their numismatic value, but I have not heard anything in the works. I would be happy if they dumped him and put anything or anybody else on the dime. As far as I am concerned he was a communist in wolf's clothing. The Great Ag |

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
IMO, everyone should hold a good amount of 90% dimes in case SHTF. I can see Regan replacing Roosevelt on the dime. That is if they don't decide to do away with the dime first. A clad dime's metal value is now about 22% of its face value.

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
The reason I prefer Roosevelts is when I first started purchasing 90% silver coins I was only buying them a roll at a time, and I kept them in some little plastic coin tubes. I would keep the Mercs and the Roosies in separate tubes, and even though I would put $5.00 face in each one, the Roosevelt tubes would be filled right to the top, whereas the Merc tubes had enough extra space for another dime or two.
So even though the wear on each individual Mercury dime is slight, it does add up if you have a lot of them. |

Yup, the most unloved silver coin, and the most divisable, useful for trade.

Go to the eBay. Type in 'Dime Roll' in the search field. Search for a roll that costs less than about $44 dollars with shipping. Buy it. I don't want to sound swarmy but it's really quite easy if you just take the time. |

The only two focus' I have are:
1. "Diversity is the hallmark of a prudent investor"; so... 2. Diversify and get the most silver for your FRN. |
Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
i dump all my 90% into a wooden box, dimes are great for filling in the airspace between the quarters and halves. it allows you to get more weight per box.

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
>Mercury = pretty
>Roos = ugly I think so also. Although I wouldn't say no to any 90% silver, I like the fact that there will never be any doubt about whether a mercury dime is silver or not. No looking at the date, seeing if it is clad, or dropping it on a table to hear the ring. ...same reason why I stopped caring about 1964 Kennedy's |

+1 on the geezer-vision. I can no longer see the dates on dimes without perching reading glasses on my nose. Blech. |
Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
The Mercuries have a nice design, definitely, but the Roosevelt's do seem to have more metal to each coin, as the Merc's are so worn (at least those that I've seen).
I'll take whichever I can get cheaper. |
Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
i've been buying junk silver for a few months now and sold off a bag of assorted coins to apmex. i still have a nice mix of junk silver coins and the roos and the kennedy halves seem to be in the best shape. mercs and the quarters seem to have taken the biggest beating on condition.

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
Line up the dimes as if you were going to roll them. Clads are easy to spot as their copper colored edge jumps out against the silver edges of the real dimes.

Re: Roosevelt Dime collectors ('64 and prior)
Have a lot of Roos dimes.......but more Mercs.....
IF a merc and a roos cost me the same $......I pick the Merc ! FDR was a socialist pres. resposible for the darn Gold Act of 1934 so the Merc is a better choice for me based on 'ideals'. :coolbeer: |
